Outdoor Wedding Tips

Whether you're getting married at the beach or in your parents backyard, here are some suggestions from weatherchannel.com when planning your outdoor wedding.

Ceremony Suggestions:

Prevent Fly-Aways
Secure tiny weights to your veil to present it from blowing in the breeze. Fishing weights are a great option because of their small size and you can spray-paint them to match your attire.

Have a Hanky Handy
Handkerchiefs not only look elegant but are also functional. With all eyes on the bride and groom, this often over-looked accessory allows you to discretely dab during the ceremony.

Be Sure
Nerves can cause even the coolest couples to break a sweat. Consider upgrading your antiperspirant to one that contains Aluminum Chloride, the ingredient proven to control excessive perspiration.

Aisle Assurance
If you’re walking down a grass aisle and it rained the night before, watch your step! Heels can get stuck and sink into wet grass. Take a practice walk beforehand so you know what to expect.

Thirst Quencher
Offer your guests lemonade or sparkling water before the ceremony so they stay hydrated and happy. In cold weather climates, have coffee and tea on-hand.

In the Hot Seat
Seating your guests in metal chairs might burn their backsides. Instead, opt for wood or Chiavari chairs, which tend to be weatherproof and UV protected.

Glaring Error
While sunset weddings are beautiful, they can also be blinding. Face guests away from the sun to avoid a glare, allowing them to see the ceremony and take pictures.

Fan-Tastic!
Make your programs in the shape of fans so guests can keep cool during the ceremony. Simply glue a popsicle stick to the bottom of the program and presto… instant air conditioning!

It’s a Wrap
Getting married in a cool climate or on a breezy beach? Encourage your bridesmaids to wear a wrap or shrug. With today’s stylish options, your wedding party can look wonderful AND stay warm!

Reception Suggestions:

The Heat is On
Check to see if the facility has gas heaters available or consider renting some to keep your guests comfortable while they dine and dance.

Tent Your Event
If your heart is set on an outdoor wedding regardless of the weather, reserve a waterproof tent. Experts recommend spending the extra bucks to get a tent with surrounding sidewalls and eaves over the walkways.

Petal Power
Flowers fare better in colder conditions than the heat so leave conterpieces and decorations indoors until the last minute. Also talk to your florist about more weather-tolerant varieties, like roses and proteas.

Securing Seating Cards
Prevent your place cards from blowing away by securing them with a weighted-down ribbon. You can also use decorative place card holders, like miniature frames, which can double as favors.

Hold the Mayo
Food with mayonnaise and other perishable ingredients shouldn’t sit out in the sun for more than an hour. Play it safe; have servers pass hors d’oeuvres and keep the buffet table indoors.

Eternal Flame
Using candles in your ceremony or reception? Cover them with glass hurricanes so the wind doesn’t extinguish the flame.

Icing on the Cake
Wedding cake should melt in your mouth – not in the sun! Trade the traditional buttercream icing, which requires refrigeration, for hardier options like fondant or marzipan.

Banish Bugs
Ask your wedding venue to spray for mosquitoes ahead of time and use citronella candles to keep bugs at bay. This is essential in humid climates where pests tend to be more prevalent.

And as always... Have a “Plan B”
Even the most controlling bride cannot control the weather, which is why your need to have a Plan B. Verify your reception venue has a room where you can quickly relocate, if necessary.
